GAUGE:

20 sts + 28 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between needles and placing it onto left needle. Knit this new stitch through the back loop - 1 st increased.
ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and knit them tog - 1 st decreased.

NOTES:

1. Elephant is knit in one piece then stuffed and seamed.
2. Ears are knit separately and sewn to Elephant.
3. A diagram is provided to clarify construction.


ELEPHANT
First Side
Note:
First side of Elephant is worked from bottom of legs up to top of head.
Rear Leg
Cast on 10 sts.
Rows 1-3: Knit.
Rows 4-8: Beg with a WS (purl) row, work in St st (k on RS, p on WS).
At the end of Row 8, Sl these sts to a holder.
Front Leg
Work as for rear leg, but do not place sts on holder.
Body
Row 9 (RS):
Knit across front leg sts, cast on 4 sts, with RS of rear leg facing, knit 10 sts of rear leg from holder - 24 sts at the end of this row.
Rows 10-24: Work in St st.
At the end of Row 24, Sl these sts to a holder.
Trunk
Note:
U-shaped Trunk is worked from the base of the U and divided for each side. One side will be finished, the other will be joined to the body and head.
Cast on 10 sts.
Rows 1-5: Beg with a WS row, work in St st for 5 rows.
Divide for Sides of Trunk
Row 6:
K4, sl these sts to a holder for upturned side of trunk, bind off 2 sts, k4 - 4 sts rem on needle.
Row 7: Purl these 4 sts.
Join Trunk to Body
Row 25:
K4 sts of trunk, cast on 3 sts, k across 24 body sts from holder - 31 sts at the end of this row.
Rows 26 and all WS Rows: Purl.
Row 27: Knit.
Shape Head
Row 29:
K1, ssk, k12, sl rem 16 sts to a holder for back - 14 sts rem for neck and head.
Row 30: Purl 14 neck and head sts.
Row 31: K1, ssk, k to end - 13 sts at the end of this row.
Rows 32-38: Work in St st.
Row 39 (Top of Head): Knit.

Second Side
Note:
Second side of Elephant is worked from head down to bottom of legs.
Shape Head
Rows 40-46:
Work in St st.
Row 47: K1, M1, k to end - 14 sts at the end of this row.
Join Second Side to First Side
Note:
When working next row, fold piece across Row 39 for top of head.
Row 49: K1, M1, k to end of sts on needle, k across 16 back sts from holder - 31 sts at the end of this row.
Row 51: Knit.
Row 53: K4, sl these sts to a holder for second side of trunk, bind off 3 sts, k to end - 24 sts rem for body.
Rows 54-68: Work in St st.
Divide for Front and Rear Legs
Row 69:
K10 for front leg, bind off 4 sts, k10 for rear leg.
Rear Leg
Working over 10 sts of rear leg only,work in St st for 5 rows.
Knit 3 rows.
Bind off.
Front Leg
From WS, rejoin yarn to 10 sts of front leg.
Work as for rear leg.
Continue Trunk
Row 1:
From WS, rejoin yarn to 4 sts of trunk on first side of body and purl across.
Rows 2-7: Work in St st.
Note: When working next row, fold trunk across Row 4.
Row 8: K4, cast on 2 sts, k across 4 sts of second side of trunk from holder - 10 sts at the end of this row.
Rows 9-12: Work in St st.
Bind off.

EARS (make 2)
Cast on 8 sts.
Row 1 and all RS Rows: Purl.
Row 2: K1, M1, k to last st, M1, k1 - 10 sts at the end of this row.
Row 4: (K1, M1) twice, k6, (K1, M1) twice - 14 sts at the end of this row.
Row 6: Knit.
Row 8: K1, ssk, k8, k2tog, k1 - 12 sts at the end of this row.
Rows 9-12: Rep Rows 5-8 - 10 sts at the end of Row 12.
Row 14: K1, (ssk) twice, (k2tog) twice, k1 - 6 sts at the end of this row.
Row 15: (P2tog) 3 times - 3 sts at the end of this row.
Cut yarn, leaving a long yarn tail. Thread tail through rem sts and pull to gather. Knot to secure.

FINISHING
Beg at back of body, seam first and second sides of body, legs, head and trunk. Stuff Elephant through opening at back of head and neck before seaming closed. Sew Ears to head.
Weave in Ends.
Tail
Cut 3 strands of yarn about 6 in. (15 cm) long. Hold strands of yarn together and fold in half. Use crochet hook to draw fold through back end of Elephant, forming a loop. Pull ends of strands through this loop. Pull to tighten. Divide into 3 groups of 2 strands each. Braid for about 2 in. (5 cm). Knot ends. Trim.
Weave in ends.
